Delicious recipe of tuna baals in a tomato sauce

Here’s a scrumptious recipe of tuna balls in a delicious tomato sauce served on your favourite cooked pasta or rice

Serves 4 Preparation time 25 minutes Cooking time 30 minutes

For the tomato sauce:

1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, 1 medium onion, finely chopped, 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped (optional), 2 x 395g or 400g cans of cherry or chopped tomatoes, 2 tea spoons of caster sugar, 25g of fresh basil roughly torn.

For the tuna balls:

2 x 200g cans of tuna steak in olive oil, 100g fresh white breadcrumbs, 50g of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, grated, 2 salad onions, finely chopped, 1 medium egg, lightly beaten.


To make the tomato sauce, heat 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a saucepan and add the onion and garlic. Fry gently for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent. Stir in the tomatoes and sugar, and season with freshly ground pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes, until the sauce is thickened and glossy. Add half the basil and keep the sauce warm over a gentle heat.

Meanwhile, place all the tuna ball ingredients into a large bowl and using a fork combine them together. Shape them into balls about the size of plum using your hands so you make around 16 balls.

Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan, add the tuna balls and cook for about 4 minutes turning occasionally until crisp and golden, and drain on kitchen paper.
Place on top of your favourite cooked pasta or rice and then pour over the tomato sauce, garnishing with the remaining basil.

Quick Recipe Tips:

  1. Make double the quantity of sauce and tuna balls—they both freeze well for a quick supper.
  2. You can also add a 1tsp of balsamic vinegar to the tomato sauce whilst its cooking.
  3. The cooked tuna balls are delicious cold as part of a picnic or a cold buffet.
